South Beach Diet Review

The south beach diet was a craze that started in early 2000. It was a diet that was originally designed by a cardiologist and a dietician. They were looking for ways to introduce a new diet to their patients who were suffering from high cholesterol.

The diet became such a big success that it was quickly marketed very successfully as the south beach diet.

The south beach diet is a very simple one. It works on two very basic principles. One is to avoid consumption of bad carbohydrates and the other is to avoid consumption of bad fats.

Bad carbohydrates – Most processed foods made from grains are examples of bad carbohydrates. Refined sugar is also an example of bad carbohydrates. The diet emphasized that these bad carbs be replaced with good carbs such as vegetables and whole grains.

Bad fats – Foods that were high in saturated fat were classified as bad fats by this diet. Red meat is generally considered a bad fat while fats from lean meat, nuts and fish are considered to be good fats.

The diet was very successful at that time because most of the foods that were consumed in 2000 were foods that were high in bad fats and bad carbohydrates. The times have since changed and the foods that are offered in the industry nowadays are of much better quality when it comes to avoiding bad carbs and bad fats.

The four phases of the south beach diet

The first phase is when the diet of a user is reviewed and drastic changes are made to it. All bad carbohydrates and bad fats are cut out from the diet or at least reduced to very minimal levels. The second phase is when more healthy alternatives are introduced to the diet to make up for the items that are eliminated. The third stage is when the user is allowed to balance their diet on their own so they are able to find the right balance of foods that will not add to their weight.

The south beach diet was very popular during the time of its introduction as awareness levels about bad carbs and bad fats was very low at that point of time. After a few years of success, it lost out in popularity to other diets that have since found other problems with the food that people consume on a regular basis.

The diet was also very popular because most of the food that was sold in the retail markets was food items that contradicted the south beach diet recommendations. Thus, the diet had a huge market to tap into where it was able to make people wiser about their food choices. Many food companies started to change their offerings to be in line with what the diet recommended as it was very popular.

As more and more of the retail food industry actually started selling what the diet recommended, the south beach diet slowly faded out as it had nothing revolutionary to offer in terms of useful information. The south beach diet is still popular and has some ardent following in small groups here and there.
